The 20th anniversary of the Terps’ National Championship

Can you believe it has been 20-years since the Maryland Terrapins were crowned the NCAA champs? For those incoming freshmen and sophomores, this was probably before their birth. Today at College Park, fans and the current student body will be celebrating a reunion of Gary Williams’ championship team with Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Lonny Baxter, Tahj Holden, Drew Nicholas, and others.

With a 62-54 victory over Indiana on April 1, 2002, the Maryland Terrapins were no longer defined by their past, but as champions. That win erased the years of being so close and set many of those star players on pro careers.

Today’s Terps’ basketball program is in a state of disarray with the mid-season departure of their coach, and too many losses to count. But today is about the positive. The Terps take on Ohio State this afternoon in a day to remember and to be celebrated.

From Cole Field House to the Xfinity Center, College Park has a storied history of great basketball. Hopefully this will be a reminder to everyone of what Terps basketball can be.
