Terps Baseball mounts three-run comeback; defeats Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-5

The Maryland Terps (4-1) completed their second comeback of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-5. With the win, the Terps start 1-0 in the 2024 Kleberg Bank College Classic.

Eddie Hacopian got things rolling with a leadoff double on the game’s first pitch. A few batters later – his brother – Chris Hacopian brought his brother home via a single. As a result, Maryland took a quick 1-0 lead in the first. Corpus Christi had some early success in the bottom of the frame and loaded up the bases with zero outs. However, they could only score two runs as they grounded into a double play. The Islanders scored two more in the fourth and expanded their lead to 4-1.

For the second game this season, the Terps started to rally late. Jacob Orr started the rally and hit an RBI single, driving in Devin Russell. Then, the Islanders made a pitching change with the Terps loading the bases. Sam Hojnar hit a two-run RBI single with the bases loaded, tying the game at four.

In the ninth inning, Eddie Hacopian hit an RBI single, and with Orr scoring, the Terps took the lead. Maryland didn’t let their foot off the gas pedal, and Hojnar hammered a two-run homer, giving the Terps a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Head coach Matt Swope put the ball in Trystan Sarcone’s hands at the bottom of the ninth quarter, and Sarcone got the job done, securing his first save of the season. On Friday night, Hojnar was one of the more impressive Terps players, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Hojnar has a hot start this season after transferring from Iowa last season.

Kenny Lippman got the start for Maryland and went five innings, allowing four runs and six hits and recording three walks against four strikeouts. However, Nate Haberthier earned the win for the Terps. Haberthier got out of two-bases-loaded jams in three innings.

“It’s awesome playing behind a guy like Nate.” “You can see from everywhere he has so much confidence on the mound. Bases loaded, both times, he was in there in big spots, and we didn’t have any doubts that he was going to do his job. He just has that confidence on the mound, and it’s really easy to play behind him in a situation like that.”

Sam Hojnar after the game

Next, Maryland plays their second game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic. They’ll face off against Pittsburgh this Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Maryland Baseball can’t complete the sweep; offense struggles in series finale

The Maryland Terps (2-1) couldn’t complete the sweep and were defeated by the Georgia Southern Eagles (1-2) 7-3.

Maryland’s offense struggled in the series finale against Georgia Southern pitcher Ty Fisher. Fisher allowed just one run on eight strikeouts and one walk through six innings. Meanwhile, it was the opposite for Maryland. Junior Meade Johnson made his 2024 Terps debut but could only manage three ⅓ innings before being pulled out of the game. Johnson allowed five runs during his first appearance of the season.

The Terps and Eagles totaled the same amount of hits (7) but the difference was Georgia Southern had twice the amount of walks as Maryland.

The Terps scored first, but then the Eagles scored five unanswered runs. With two outs in the third inning, fifth-year senior Charlie Gelnon recorded his first base hit on the season, registering a two-out double. Shortly after, Freshman Brayden Martin plated Gelnon with a base hit.

However, in the following inning, Georgia Southern took the lead with a big offensive inning. Base hits, errors, and a wild pitch allowed the Eagles to take a 3-1 lead going into the fourth inning. Moreover, the onslaught continued when Luke Odden hammered a double down the right-field line, and he was brought home via a Josh Tate single.

Junior Jacob Orr helped to cut the Terps deficit with an RBI single, and a few batters later, Junior Eddie Hacopian scored because of a wild pitch. However, it wasn’t only a short time until the Eagles expanded their lead, with Sam Blancato hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Maryland will now return home to College Park where they’ll take on Mount St Mary’s at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Meet your new Maryland Terps’ baseball beat writer

by Ben Belford-Peltzman

Hi all,
The story starts two years ago. It was a beautiful summer day. I had just finished my fourth baseball game of the weekend, and instead of being exhausted, I was bitter. I’m not bothered that I went 2-12 at the plate or botched a ground ball. And it wasn’t that my team didn’t win a game all tournament. It was because I knew that would be the last time I would put on my cleats and play the game I love – Baseball.

Terps get upset by a final score of 56-53 by Rutgers

There are the games that you should win — and there are the games you must win. Tonight’s match-up against Rutgers was the latter. However, Rutgers and their tough play at the end had the Terps on the wrong end of a 56-53 final score. The Terps cut it to one point with under a minute, and Rutgers got it back to three points to force Maryland to shoot a 3-pointer to try to tie it at the end. It was not meant to be.
